(International World in Korea·IWIK)가 창간한 영어 온라인 매체 KGN(Korea Global News)의 리포터로 활동하게 된 것이다.

[Africans in Our Midst] (52) 'Storyteller' Zahra finds joy as Korean comes more naturally

Drawn to Korea by K-pop, dramas; broadens horizons through KOICA activities

Anthology with her short story shown at Rabat book fair; now reporter for English news outlet

"It's fun and rewarding to feel myself becoming more comfortable speaking Korean little by little."

For Fatima Zahra El Yaagoubi, a 28-year-old student from Morocco, Korea has quickly become a familiar place.

Fatima Zahra, who first set foot in the country in August last year, is pursuing a Ph.D. in business administration at Soonchunhyang University. Although she has lived here for just over a year, Korea hardly feels unfamiliar to her anymore.

Behind her relatively quick adjustment is a connection with Korea that she had been building long before her arrival.

What began as an interest in Korean dramas and K-pop led her to study the Korean language and gradually expanded into other areas, including the marketing strategies of Korean companies.

Even before coming to Korea, she had served as an honorary reporter for Korea.net, the Korean government's multilingual online news platform, and participated in WeKO, an outreach program run by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), steadily expanding her ties with the country.

In an interview conducted via social media, Fatima Zahra said that before coming here, she had mostly encountered Korea through media content, but living and studying in the country has allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of it.

Fatima Zahra studied economics and business at Mohammed V University in Morocco and researched how influencer marketing affects consumers' purchase intentions in graduate school. Her interest in Korea naturally intersected with her academic field.

As she became familiar with Korean beauty and skincare products, she began paying close attention to how Korean companies and brands use social media and influencers to communicate with consumers.

She now hopes to extend the research she began in Morocco by comparing consumers in Morocco and Korea.

"Korea and Morocco have different cultures and consumer characteristics, so I think it would be interesting and meaningful to compare how the same marketing strategies are received differently in the two countries," she said.

Her ultimate academic goal is to broaden her research into digital marketing and consumer behavior.

Fatima Zahra began learning Korean at a language center at her university while pursuing her master's degree in Morocco.

After taking a break from the language for about two years, however, she forgot much of what she had learned. Yet, when she resumed her studies at Soonchunhyang University, the grammar and expressions she had previously learned gradually came back to her.

One professor she met there left a particularly strong impression on her by turning grammar points that students found difficult into songs to help them learn.

"Learning through songs made grammar much easier to remember," she said.

For Fatima Zahra, who is accustomed to Arabic and English, Korean grammar and pronunciation remain challenging. Still, she enjoys the process of gradually becoming able to communicate directly in Korean.

Living in Korea has also challenged some of her expectations about the country.

She found Korea safer than she had anticipated. She had assumed Korean food was mostly spicy but discovered a much wider variety of flavors and dishes after arriving.

She was also impressed by the wide range of activities available to international students.

On the other hand, she found it difficult to adjust to Korea's bitterly cold winters and hot, humid summers. Finding halal food prepared in accordance with Islamic dietary rules has sometimes been challenging as well.

Fatima Zahra also has a strong interest in listening to people's stories and sharing them through writing and other forms of content.

From 2024 to 2025, she worked as a co-host of the Moroccan edition of Oumour Themna, a project by the Munathara Initiative. The program invited guests from various backgrounds to discuss challenges facing local communities and explore possible solutions.

Her interest in writing also led her to fiction.

Last year, her short story "Confiscated Dreams," submitted to a writing competition for young Moroccan writers, was selected by the jury and published in an anthology, alongside works by other young writers. The anthology was also presented at the Rabat International Book Fair that year.

After coming to Korea, Fatima Zahra had little time for writing as she focused on her studies. Recently, however, she found a new opportunity to write after becoming a reporter for Korea Global News (KGN), an English-language online media outlet launched by International World in Korea (IWIK).

"I'd like to write articles about events I participate in and things I experience firsthand in Korea. I also want to write about what I have felt while living here and share the stories of different people," she explained.

Living in Korea, Fatima Zahra has discovered that Morocco is better known among Koreans than she had expected. She has met people who have traveled there or said they would like to visit.

She believes interest in Morocco grew further after the country's national football team became the first African team to reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Morocco is a co-host of the 2030 World Cup, along with Spain and Portugal.

But the Morocco that Fatima Zahra wants Koreans to discover goes beyond football and tourist attractions.

"In Morocco, we value spending time with family and sharing food and conversation with friends and guests. I want to introduce Koreans to our culture of valuing people and warmly welcoming guests," she said.

During Ramadan, she once prepared Moroccan food and traditional tea for a Korean friend. Seeing her friend enjoy the food and tea gave her the pleasure of sharing her culture firsthand.

Fatima Zahra also points to Morocco's cultural diversity as one of its greatest attractions.

She explained that Arab culture and the culture of the Amazigh, the indigenous people of North Africa, coexist in Morocco, alongside African and Mediterranean influences.

Fatima Zahra's interest in relations between Korea and Africa broadened further through her participation in WeKO.

Before coming to Korea, she participated in the sixth WeKO supporters group while living in Morocco, creating social media content that introduced KOICA and official development assistance (ODA). After arriving in Korea, she continued with the seventh WeKO group.

She has also been active as a K-campus University ambassador, using social media to introduce Korean university life and culture from the perspective of an international student.

Through these experiences, Fatima Zahra said she was impressed that Korea seeks not only to help other countries develop but also to share experiences and pursue growth together.

She hopes exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Africa will expand, particularly in the areas of youth, education and technology.

"There are many young people in Africa who want to learn new things and develop their ideas. I believe Korea's experience and the ideas of African youth can come together to create good results," she said.

Fatima Zahra's immediate goal is to successfully complete her Ph.D.

After earning her doctorate, she hopes to gain more practical experience in marketing and business while continuing her research, with the long-term goal of becoming a professor.

Despite the demands of her studies, Fatima Zahra has no intention of giving up her interest in telling people's stories through writing.

She wants to share her experiences in Korea with people in Morocco while introducing Moroccan culture and the stories of its people to Koreans.

"I want to keep doing what I love and play even a small role in helping these two different countries understand each other better and grow closer."
