중앙아프리카 카메룬에서 건너와 한국살이 9년 차로 접어든 로널드 문코아(38) 씨는 요즘 설레는 기분으로 하루하루를 보내고 있다. 한국에서 만나 7년가량 교제해 온 5살 연하의 백수민(33) 씨와 결혼식을 앞두고 있기 때문이다.

서울 노원구 공릉동 골목에 자리 잡은 베이커리 카페 '비기닝 브레드'는 두 사람의 삶이 펼쳐지는 공간이다. 오전에 가게 일을 하고, 오후에는 방과후 영어 선생님으로 활동하는 1인 2역이 로널드 씨의 일상이다.

카메룬 야운데 대학에서 영문학을 전공한 로널드 씨는 2018년 경기대학교 교환학생으로 한국에 왔다. 학업과 문화 경험의 폭을 넓히기 위한 선택이었다.

한국에 살면서 자연스럽게 한국 사회와 교육 환경에 관심을 갖게 됐고, 점차 이곳에서 삶의 터전을 마련해야겠다고 생각하게 됐다고 말했다.

어머니가 공립 중등학교 교장을 지내는 등 교육자 집안에서 성장한 그는 카메룬에서 중등교사 자격을 취득했고, 한국에서도 교육 관련 전문 과정을 이수하며 영어 강사로서 기반을 다졌다.

한국 생활 초기에는 다양한 진로를 두고 고민하기도 했다. 하지만 교육이 사회에 기여할 수 있는 지속적인 방식이라는 점을 확인하고 가르치는 일을 직업으로 선택하게 됐다고 했다.

한국에서 영어 강사로 활동한 지 6년째인 그는 학생들과의 '관계'를 가장 중시한다고 말했다. 학생들을 단순한 학습자가 아닌 형제자매처럼 대하며 자연스러운 유대감을 형성하는 것이 자신의 교육 방식이라는 것이다.

그는 "친밀한 관계가 형성돼야 신뢰가 쌓이고 제대로 가르칠 수 있다"고 강조했다.

한국 학생들의 영어 실력에 대해선 "문법과 시험 준비 능력이 뛰어나다"고 평가하면서도 "완벽해야 한다는 부담 때문에 말하기를 주저하는 경향이 있다"고 지적했다.

그는 또 한국 학생들은 성실하고 목표 의식이 뚜렷하다며 정답을 중시하는 학습 방식이 자연스러운 의사 표현을 제한하는 측면도 있는 것 같다고 덧붙였다.

그는 "실수도 배우는 과정이고 문법보다 중요한 것은 자신감"이라며 영어를 배울 때 자유롭게 말해 보는 연습의 중요성을 강조했다.

로널드 씨의 영어 수업은 교실 밖에서도 이어진다. 축구를 좋아하는 그는 아이들과 함께 공을 차며 영어를 가르치기도 한다.

"설명만 듣는 것보다 몸을 움직이며 그때그때 필요한 표현을 배우는 게 효과적입니다. 모국어를 배울 때처럼요."

한국의 교육 환경에 대해 느낀 점도 밝혔다.

"학생과 교사의 관계가 다소 수직적인 것 같아요. 조금 더 자유롭게 의견을 나눌 수 있는 분위기를 만들면 학습 효과가 더 높아질 수 있다고 생각합니다."

로널드 씨는 영어를 가르치는 입장에서 학생들이 점차 자신감을 얻어 영어로 먼저 말을 걸어올 때 가장 큰 보람을 느낀다고 말했다.

두 사람이 운영하는 '비기닝 브레드' 이름은 로널드 씨가 지었다. 빵으로 하루를 시작한다는 의미를 담았다.

로널드 씨는 "영세한 가게들이 지속적으로 운영될 수 있는 환경을 만들어야 한다"며 "소상공인은 지역 경제와 공동체를 함께 지탱하는 존재"라고 강조했다.

그는 카메룬에 대해선 "영어와 프랑스어를 공용어로 쓰는 등 다양한 문화가 공존하는 나라"라며 "서로 다른 배경을 이해하는 것이 자연스러운 사회"라고 소개했다.

또 한국과 아프리카가 가까워지기 위해서는 "서로에 대한 이해와 교류 기회를 늘리는 것이 필요하다"며 "교육과 문화 교류가 그 출발점이 될 수 있다"고 말했다.

지난 3월 12일 자신의 카페에서 진행된 인터뷰 내내 밝은 표정을 지은 로널드 씨였지만, 어려웠던 한국 생활을 언급하는 대목에선 잠시 표정이 어두워졌다.

코로나19 시기에 일을 하고도 임금을 제대로 받지 못한 적이 있었다고 했다. 아프리카 출신이라는 이유로 편견을 느낀 적도 있었다고 털어놨다.

그는 "한국에는 열린 시각을 가진 사람들이 많지만 그러지 못한 경우도 있는 것 같다"며 "서로를 이해하려는 노력이 중요하다"고 말했다.

한국에서 가정을 이룬 로널드 씨의 꿈은 진행형이다.

Ronald Munkoah (38), who came from Cameroon, a country in Central Africa, and is now in his ninth year of living in Korea, says he is spending his days with excitement. He is preparing for his wedding with Baek Su-min (33), whom he has been dating for about seven years since meeting in Korea.

The bakery cafe Beginning Bread, located in an alley in Gongneung-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul, is the place where their lives have unfolded. Ronald's daily life consists of two roles: working at the shop in the morning and working as an after-school English teacher in the afternoon.

Munkoah, who majored in English literature at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon, arrived in Korea in 2018 as an exchange student at Kyonggi University. He decided to come here to broaden his academic and cultural experiences.

He said that while living in Korea, he naturally became interested in Korean society and its educational environment, and gradually came to think that he should build his life here.

Growing up in a family of educators, in which his mother served as a principal of a public secondary school, he obtained a secondary teaching certificate in Cameroon and also completed education-related professional programs in Korea, building a foundation as an English teacher.

Now in his sixth year working as an English teacher in Korea, Munkoah said he places the greatest importance on relationships with students. "Only when relationships with students are formed can trust be built, and only then can proper teaching take place," he emphasized.

Regarding Korean students' English ability, Munkoah said, "They are strong in grammar and test preparation," but pointed out that "they tend to hesitate to speak because of the pressure to be perfect."

He added that Korean students are diligent and have clear goals, but their style of learning, which focuses on correct answers, may limit natural expression.

"Making mistakes is part of learning, and confidence is more important than grammar," he said, stressing the importance of practicing speaking freely when learning English.

Outside the classroom, Munkoah continues to teach English, even while playing football with children.

"It is more effective to learn necessary expressions at the moment when the body is moving, rather than just listening to explanations. Just like when learning one's mother tongue."

The name of the bakery cafe, Beginning Bread, which the couple now run together, was chosen by Munkoah. It carries the meaning of starting the day with bread.

He greets customers first and naturally engages with them, playing a leading role in creating a friendly atmosphere in the shop.

He also said that for Korea and Africa to become closer, "it is necessary to increase mutual understanding and opportunities for exchanges. Education and cultural exchanges can be the starting point."

Although Munkoah maintained a bright expression throughout the interview at his cafe on March 12, his face darkened briefly when he mentioned the difficulties he experienced while living in Korea.

He said there were times during the COVID-19 period when he did not receive proper payment for his work. He also said he has felt prejudice because he is from Africa.

"There are many people in Korea who have an open mindset, but there are also some who do not," he said. "It is important to try to understand each other."

Munkoah, who has built a family in Korea, says his dream is ongoing.

He continues his work as an English teacher and bakery owner while thinking about various ways to expand exchanges between Korea and Africa.

"I want to grow further as an educator who connects Korea and Africa. Through my work and my family, I want to show that multicultural families and foreign professionals are not outsiders but partners who grow together in Korean society, especially in the field of education."
