조부는 강뉴부대 상이용사…"70년 지나도 후손 예우하는 한국에 감명"

통신 인프라 경험과 환경 접목 공부…"조국 산업과 기술 발전 이끌 것"

명지대에서 환경·에너지공학 석사 과정을 밟고 있는 에티오피아 출신 아베네제르 요하네스(29)는 지난달 19일 경기도 용인의 한 카페에서 연합뉴스와 만나 이같이 말했다. 해외 유학을 준비하는 자국 청년들에게 하고 싶은 말을 묻자 주저 없이 나온 답변이었다.

앞서 그는 강원도 화천군이 후원하는 한국전 참전용사 후손 장학 프로그램에 선발돼 지난해 8월 한국에 왔다.

에티오피아 수도 아디스아바바에서 자란 아베네제르는 현지 명문인 곤다르대에서 토목공학을 전공했다.

2020년 12월 대학을 졸업하고, 한국 유학길에 오르기 전까지 약 5년간 중국 통신장비업체 화웨이와 ZTE, 그리고 이노비스 텔레콤 네트워크 컨설턴시에서 차례로 근무했다.

화웨이에서는 현장 엔지니어로 출발해 품질관리 책임자로도 일했다.

그가 에티오피아 전국 곳곳을 누비면서 관여한 통신 기지국 구축 사업이 350건을 넘는다고 한다.

"도로와 다리가 사람들을 물리적으로 연결한다면 통신 인프라는 사람들을 디지털로 연결합니다. 인터넷은 교육과 금융, 의료 서비스 접근성을 높이는 핵심 인프라입니다. 에티오피아의 디지털 전환을 지원하는 일에 종사한 것을 자랑스럽게 생각합니다."

그는 에티오피아의 통신 환경이 최근 수년간 상당한 발전을 했지만, 여전히 개선의 여지가 있다고 평가했다.

"에티오피아는 한국과 비교하면 아직 인프라를 더욱 확충해야 할 부분이 있습니다."

아베네제르의 할아버지는 한국전쟁 당시 에티오피아 강뉴(Kagnew)부대 소속으로 참전했다.

당시 17세였던 할아버지는 참전을 위해 나이를 높여 지원할 정도로 의지가 강했다고 한다. 전투 중 부상을 당했으나 무사히 귀국했고, 이후 가족들에게 한국에 대한 이야기를 자주 들려줬다.

"할아버지는 한국이 에티오피아와 특별한 우정을 나눈 나라라고 말씀하시곤 했습니다."

아베네제르는 한국전쟁이 끝난 지 70여 년이 지났음에도 참전용사들과 후손들을 기억하고 예우하는 모습에 깊은 감명을 받았다고 말했다.

"한국은 과거의 희생을 잊지 않고 있습니다. 참전용사 후손들에게 교육 기회를 제공하는 장학 프로그램은 감사의 마음을 행동으로 보여주는 매우 의미 있는 사업이라고 생각합니다."

아베네제르는 한국에 오기 전에 이탈리아 대학원으로 진학할 기회가 있었지만, 한국행을 선택했다고 한다.

그 선택에는 할아버지와 한국의 인연뿐 아니라 직업적 경험도 영향을 미쳤다.

통신 인프라 분야에서 일하던 그는 삼성전자와 SK하이닉스 같은 한국 기업들이 세계 기술 혁신을 이끄는 모습을 보며 한국의 산업 발전 모델에 관심을 갖게 됐다.

"화웨이에서 근무하면서 세계 여러 기술 기업을 가까이에서 지켜볼 기회가 많았습니다. 그 과정에서 한국이 어떻게 교육과 연구를 바탕으로 세계적인 기술 기업들을 키워냈는지 궁금해졌습니다."

그는 "한국은 단순히 경제적으로 성장한 나라가 아니라 교육과 연구, 혁신을 통해 발전한 나라"라며 "그 경험을 직접 배우고 싶었다"고 말했다.

현재 아베네제르는 환경·에너지공학을 공부하며 통신 인프라 분야에서 쌓은 경험을 환경 분야에 접목하는 방안을 연구하고 있다.

인공지능(AI)을 활용해 팔당호 수질을 예측하는 환경영향평가 연구에도 참여하고 있다.

"이제는 단순히 인프라를 건설하는 것만으로는 부족합니다. 환경에 미치는 영향을 함께 고려하는 지속 가능한 개발이 중요합니다."

그는 한국 유학 생활에서 가장 보람 있는 점으로 배움의 기회를 마음껏 누릴 수 있는 환경을 꼽았다.

아베네제르는 두 학기를 보내며 체험한 한국 사회의 높은 교육열과 연구 중심 문화에 대한 생각도 밝혔다.

"한국은 문제를 해결할 때 교육과 연구를 가장 중요한 수단으로 활용하는 것 같아요. 그것이 오늘날 한국 발전의 원동력이라고 생각합니다. 한국에 직접 와서 보니 나라의 미래를 바꾸는 힘은 결국 교육과 연구에 있다는 사실을 확인하게 됐습니다."

최근 한국을 방문한 아내와 함께 나들이를 즐기고 있다.

2024년 9월 결혼한 아베네제르는 한국 유학 중이던 올해 2월 14일 첫딸 출산 소식을 전화로 들었다.

당시 서울 아현동에서 열린 재한 에티오피아 학생 행사에 참석 중이었다.

"정말 큰 축복이라고 생각했습니다. 가장 기쁜 순간을 가족과 함께하지 못했다는 아쉬움이 컸지만요."

그의 안타까운 사연을 알게 된 지도교수와 주변 사람들이 도움의 손길을 내밀었다. 덕분에 에티오피아의 한 기술기업에서 프로젝트 매니저로 일하는 아내가 딸을 데리고 한국을 방문해 약 두 달 동안 함께 지낼 수 있었다.

그는 "가족과 함께한 두 달은 한국 생활에서 가장 소중한 기억 가운데 하나로 남을 것"이라고 말했다.

아베네제르는 한국 유학을 마치면 에티오피아로 돌아가 한국에서 배운 지식과 기술을 활용해 국가와 사회 발전에 기여하고 싶다고 말했다.

장기적으로는 자신의 회사를 설립하는 것이 목표다.

"할아버지는 군인으로 한국에 왔고, 저는 학생으로 한국에 왔습니다. 저는 한국에서 배운 지식과 경험을 바탕으로 에티오피아의 기술 혁신과 산업 발전을 이끄는 사람이 되고 싶습니다."

그러면서 한국을 꿈꾸는 에티오피아 청년들에게 이런 말을 해주고 싶다고 했다.

"배우고 성장하고자 한다면 한국으로 오세요. 한국은 교육과 연구의 힘이 무엇인지를 보여주는 나라입니다."

Abenezer Yohannes, a 29-year-old Ethiopian master's student in environmental engineering and energy at Myongji University, arrived in Korea in August 2025 through a scholarship program for descendants of Korean War veterans supported by Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province.

When we met at a café in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on June 19, he offered that advice without hesitation when asked what message he would like to share with young Ethiopians considering overseas study.

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Abenezer studied civil engineering at the University of Gondar, one of the country's leading universities.

After graduating in December 2020, he spent about five years working in Ethiopia's telecommunications sector before coming to Korea. He worked for Huawei, ZTE and Innovis Telecom Network Consultancy.

At Huawei, he started as a field engineer and later served in quality management roles. According to Abenezer, he participated in more than 350 telecommunications base station projects across Ethiopia.

"If roads and bridges connect people physically, telecommunications infrastructure connects people digitally. Internet access is a key infrastructure that improves access to education, finance and healthcare. I am proud to have contributed to Ethiopia's digital transformation."

Abenezer said Ethiopia's telecommunications infrastructure has made significant progress in recent years, although further development is still needed, adding that many people still lack reliable access to internet services.

One of the things that impressed him most after arriving in Korea was the country's well-developed infrastructure and public systems.

"Transportation, communications and administrative services are closely interconnected. I was impressed by how efficiently services are organized to make life easier for people."

Abenezer's grandfather served in the Kagnew Battalion, Ethiopia's contingent that fought alongside South Korean and United Nations forces during the Korean War.

According to family accounts, his grandfather volunteered at the age of 17 by adding a year to his age in order to meet the enlistment requirement. He was wounded during the war but survived and later returned home, often sharing stories about Korea with his family.

"My grandfather often told us that Korea was a country with a special friendship with Ethiopia."

Abenezer said he was deeply moved by the fact that Korea continues to remember and honor war veterans and their descendants more than 70 years after the end of the Korean War.

"Korea has not forgotten the sacrifices of the past. Providing educational opportunities for the descendants of war veterans is a meaningful way of expressing gratitude through action."

Before coming to Korea, Abenezer also had an opportunity to pursue graduate studies in Italy. However, he chose Korea.

His decision was influenced not only by his family's connection to Korea but also by his professional background.

Working in telecommunications infrastructure, he became interested in Korea's development model and the global success of companies, such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.

"While working at Huawei, I had many opportunities to observe leading technology companies. I became curious about how Korea had nurtured world-class companies through education, research and innovation," he said.

"Korea is not simply a country that achieved economic growth. It is a country that developed through education, research and innovation. I wanted to learn from that experience firsthand."

Abenezer receives a scholarship certificate from Hwacheon County in August 2025.

Currently, Abenezer is studying environmental engineering and energy while exploring ways to apply his telecommunications experience to environmental challenges.

He is also currently involved in an Environmental Impact Assessment project that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict water quality in the Paldang Reservoir.

"Today, it is no longer enough simply to build infrastructure. Sustainable development requires us to consider environmental impacts as well."

Asked what he finds most rewarding about studying in Korea, he pointed to the opportunity to learn in an environment that actively supports education and research.

Reflecting on his two semesters in Korea, he also spoke about the country's strong educational culture and commitment to research.

"Korea seems to use education and research as its most important tools for solving problems. I believe that is one of the driving forces behind its development. After coming here, I realized once again that education and research are what truly shape a country's future."

Abenezer married in September 2024. While studying in Korea, he received a phone call on Feb. 14, 2026, informing him that his first daughter had been born.

At the time, he was attending a gathering in Seoul of Ethiopian students in Korea.

"It was truly a blessing. At the same time, I felt sad that I could not share that precious moment with my family."

With support from his professor and people around him, his wife -- who works as a project manager at a technology company in Ethiopia -- was later able to visit Korea with their daughter. The family spent nearly two months together.

"Those two months with my family will remain one of my most precious memories in Korea."

After completing his studies, Abenezer hopes to return to Ethiopia and contribute to his country's development by applying the knowledge and skills he has acquired in Korea.

His long-term goal is to establish his own company.

"My grandfather came to Korea as a soldier, and I came as a student. I hope to become someone who contributes to Ethiopia's technological innovation and industrial development using the knowledge and experience I gained here."

Asked what he would like to say to young Ethiopians who dream of studying in Korea, he replied: "If you want to learn and grow, come to Korea. Korea is a country that demonstrates the power of education and research."
